James - Laid

Dressed me up in womens clothes
Messed around with gender roles
Line my eyes and call me pretty

Laid, by James is one of my personal favorites.

Laid, at least in the United States, was their one and only hit record. The song, and the album of the same name, was released in 1993. Another single, Sit Down, had little air play in the US but did make the charts in the UK.

James is actually an alternative rock group, consisting of six guys, based in Manchester, England. It was formed in 1982 and, according to Wikipedia, is still performing.

Videos of Laid, performed by Matt Nathanson, are also available on YouTube.

The lyrics:

This bed is on fire with passionate love
The neighbors complain about the noises above
But she only comes when she's on top

My therapist said not to see you no more
She said you're like a disease without any cure
She said I'm so obsessed that I'm becoming a bore, oh no

Ah you think you're so pretty (eeeeeeeeeeeee eeeeeeeeeeeeeee)

Caught your hand inside the till
Slammed your fingers in the door
Fought with kitchen knives and skewers
Dressed me up in womens clothes
Messed around with gender roles
Line my eyes and call me pretty (eeeeeeeeeeeee eeeeeeeeeeeeeee)

Moved out of the house so you moved next door
I locked you out you cut a hole in the wall
I found you sleeping next to me I thought I was alone
You're driving me crazy when are you coming home

Laiiiid Laiiiid (eeeeeeeeeeeee eeeeeeeeeeeeeee)

  1. That's spooky. I had that tune running through my head earlier today. I remember buying the album (back in the 90s).

As you say, James were quite big over here in the UK. Funny how some bands travel well and some don't.

  2. Thanks for the comment, Lynn. I love this song. Feel free to suggest others. I have had several suggestions and am getting to them as time permits.

  3. I was lucky enough to see the band James when they supported The Smiths back in the mid-1980's.
