Suzanne Vega - As Girls Go

You make a really good girl
As girls go
Still kind of look like a guy
I never thought to wonder why

OK...Everyone who has heard of Suzanne Vega raise their hand.

Not many hands raised? Perhaps a few in the UK?

Do you recognize this?

My name is Luka
I live on the second floor
I live upstairs from you
Yes I think you've seen me before

If you hear something late at night
Some kind of trouble. some kind of fight
Just don't ask me what it was
Just don't ask me what it was
Just don't ask me what it was

Sure you do! It was a big hit. You may or may not have liked it, but now you remember Suzanne Vega, right? If you're singing Luka in your head right now, you can go here for more.

But, you're not here to read about Luka.

You're here because you want to hear As Girls Go, by Suzanne Vega. Not a lot to say about her, however. Luka made it to number 3 on the US charts. 23 on the UK charts. Other than that, she really has not had a lot of radio play in the States. The single, 99.9 Fahrenheit Degrees, got some play on the alternative stations. Tom's Diner made it to number 2 on the UK charts, number 5 on the US charts, but I don't even recognize the song. Her first album was released in 1985 and made it to number 11 on the UK charts.

Suzanne Vega has spent most of her life in the big city, New York, New York. She was born in 1959. Although she lives in the States, her album sales seem to have consistently done better in the United Kingdom, with the exception of her two most recent albums which do not appear to have created much excitement any where.

As Girls Go is a rather cute song about a male to female crossdresser or transsexual. I have found very little about the song. I wonder how many of you have actually heard it? It's from the 99.9F Degrees album, released in 1985. I must admit that I do have the album but I'm really not into her music. I do like As Girls Go and I do like the fuzz guitar at the end.

Sadly, no video is available, but you can listen.

The lyrics:

You make a really good girl
As girls go
Still kind of look like a guy
I never thought to wonder why

If I could pull this off
Would I know for certain
The real situation
Behind the curtain

So beautiful
Damsel in distress
Not exactly natural
Stunning none the less

What happened to you?
To make you more girl than girls are
Would you ever show or tell
Cause you're so good so far

You make a really good girl
As girls go
As girls go
As girls go
As girls go
As girls go

Let's chronicle
The dark side of the life
Did you ever keep the date
With the steel side of the knife

Doesn't matter to me
Which side of the line
You happen to be
At any given time

You make a really good girl
As girls go
As girls go
As girls go
As girls go
As girls go

  1. Okay, you have finally hit on my fave T-tune. I used a quote from it in a blog once. I can't believe I forgot about it.

I LOVE this album. The production is much more brittle and percussive than her other stuff, thanks to then-husband Mitchell Froom. She doesn't have a voice with a lot of range, but she makes up for it with very literate, emotive writing.

Thanks for digging around to find a more obscure choice!

  3. @Leslie - Yeah, this one has been on my list for a while. Just not a big fan of Suzanne Vega. Lyrics, aside, I do like this one...the tune, tempo, etc.

@Jill - THANKS! One more to add to a growing list.

  5. Have the first two albums full of superb writing but then she seemed to loose visibility in UK media when she went electric so I missed this one.

    Thanks.
