It's a mixed up, muddled up, shook up world,
except for Lola.

Chrissie beat me to the punch on this one, and that girl is SO proud of herself!!!
So, I am going to let Chrissie do this classic song, by the Kinks, all by herself. In other words, I am totally stealing this one from her blog:
This dates from 1970, and even then the BBC was running a very tight ship as regards censorship. In this case, they objected to the use of Coca-Cola in the original version of the song, claiming it was Product Placement. The Kinks had to change the words to cherry cola. However, because of the song's very clever lyrics, it seems the Beeb's failed to really understand the content, and so it got played.
For example, the words "I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man,
and so's Lola." could be taken as intended, ie, he's a man and so is Lola, but could also be construed as the singer being glad he is a man, and Lola also being glad that the singer is a man.
It wouldn't fool a child today. Diva heard it once and picked up on it straight way, and did our family's "secret sign" for Girl on the Inside, Boy on the Outside.
The Lyrics:
I met her in a club down in old Soho
where you drink champagne and it tastes just like Cherry Cola
C-O-L-A Cola.
She walked up to me and she asked me to dance.
I asked her her name and in a dark brown voice she said, "Lola"
L-O-L-A Lola, lo lo lo Lola
Well, I'm not the world's most physical guy,
but when she squeesed me tight she nearly broke my spine
Oh my Lola, lo lo lo Lola, lo lo lo Lola
Well, I'm not dumb but I can't understand
why she walk like a woman and talk like a man
Oh my Lola, lo lo lo Lola, lo lo lo Lola
Well, we drank champagne and danced all night,
under electric candlelight.
She picked me up and sat me on her knee,
and said, "Dear boy, won't you come home with me?"
Well, I'm not the world's most passionate guy,
but when I looked in her eyes,
Well I almost fell for my Lola,
Lo lo lo Lola, lo lo lo Lola
I pushed her away. I walked to the door.
I fell to the floor. I got down on my knees.
Then I looked at her, and she at me.
Well, that's the way that I want it to stay.
And I always want it to be that way for my Lola.
Lo lo lo Lola.
Girls will be boys, and boys will be girls.
It's a mixed up, muddled up, shook up world,
except for Lola. Lo lo lo Lola. Lo lo lo Lola.
Well I left home just a week before,
and I'd never ever kissed a woman before,
But Lola smiled and took me by the hand,
and said, "Dear boy, gonna make you a man."
Well I'm not the world's most masculine man,
but I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man,
and so's Lola.
Lo lo lo Lola. Lo lo lo Lola.

A real classic and I think high in the all time top whatever. And then I quite often wonder how many people get the content of the song.
ReplyDeleteZagria also featured Lola in her fab Gender Variance in the Arts blog and I can never compete with her quality material!
